With apologies for cross-posting, I am pleased to announce the publication of Understanding Private Law: Essays in Honour of Stephen A Smith (Hart, 2025). Steve Smith, who passed away in 2022, was a long-time member of the RDG and colleagues will know that he wrote a series of important papers on restitution, and that it featured prominently in his book Rights, Wrongs, and Injustices: The Structure of Remedial Law (OUP, 2019).

 

Understanding Private Law includes 23 essays in addition to a Foreword and Introduction. In line with Steve's wishes, the essays all aim to engage with one or more of the arguments that Steve made in his own work. The result is a set of papers that ranges all across private law theory:
